What We Do

Hobart Communication Clinic offers Speech Pathology assessment and treatment for children with:

  • Language delay (late talkers);
  • Receptive language disorder (difficulties understanding spoken language, such as difficulty following instructions);
  • Expressive language disorder (difficulty using spoken language, such as grammatical errors, difficulty formulating sentences, and word-finding difficulties);
  • Stuttering;
  • Literacy difficulties;
  • Articulation disorder;
  • Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (E.g. dribbling, tongue thrust)
  • Fussy eating.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN AN ASSESSMENT?

The assessment process involves the following:

A 15-minute phone call between the parent/guardian and the clinician to collect background information.

2 x 50-minute clinic appointments with the child, parent/guardian and the clinician, which includes:

  • A comprehensive assessment of the child’s communication skills, oral structures and feeding skills to determine any areas of difficulty;
  • An individually tailored combination of formal, play-based and informal assessment techniques;

A consultation meeting between the parent/guardian and the clinician to:

  • Discuss the assessment results, report and therapy plan
  • Provide Recommendations to support the child/ offer referrals to other professionals as required.

WHAT DOES THERAPY INVOLVE?

Your Speech Pathologist will design a tailored treatment program for your child. Therapy will be evidence-based and engaging and will usually occur on a weekly or fortnightly basis. Review assessments will be offered at regular intervals to check your child’s progress, address any questions or concerns you might have, and inform therapy plans going forward.
